After Winter: A Quirky Display Font for Branding Projects

There’s something about starting a new branding project that feels like opening a blank canvas. I was recently working on a visual refresh for a local handmade soap shop, and after sketching out a few logo concepts, I decided to test After Winter as the main typeface. It wasn’t an immediate choice—it took a few rounds of font testing, but once I saw it in action, I knew it had a special place in this project.

After Winter is an incredibly quirky and sweet display font. Its curves are soft, its strokes are playful, and it carries a sense of warmth that makes it feel approachable. It’s not the kind of font you’d use for a corporate report or a legal document, but it’s perfect for anything that needs a touch of personality—like the branding of a small business with a creative soul.

A Font That Feels Like a Hug

The first thing that stood out about After Winter was its character. It’s not just a font; it’s a mood. The letterforms have a gentle, almost whimsical quality that immediately puts you in mind of things like children’s books, cartoon illustrations, and hand-painted signs. It feels like a warm hug wrapped in typography.

I tested it on a logo concept for the soap shop, and it worked beautifully. The word “Bloom” in After Winter felt like it was blooming right off the page. It didn’t overpower the design, but it gave it a softness that matched the brand’s values—natural, nurturing, and community-focused.

When I placed it on a packaging mockup, it looked equally at home. The font’s uniqueness made the product stand out on store shelves without being too loud. It balanced charm with clarity, which is rare in display fonts.

How After Winter Stands Up in Real Design Work

I used After Winter across several elements of the project: a logo draft, brand board, website header, social media layout, and even a business card. Each time, it performed well in its role. On the website hero section, it drew attention without distracting from the imagery. In a social media post, it added a friendly tone that aligned with the brand’s voice.

As a display font, After Winter shines brightest when used for short phrases, headlines, or accents. It doesn’t hold up well in long body text, which makes sense given its decorative nature. But for a brand identity that leans into creativity, playfulness, and approachability, it’s a solid choice.

It also pairs well with more structured fonts. When I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body copy, the contrast helped maintain readability while keeping the overall design cohesive. Think of After Winter as the headline, and a modern sans serif as the supporting cast—it works in harmony.

Where After Winter Fits Best

After Winter is best suited for projects that need a bit of personality without sacrificing professionalism. This includes:

However, it may not be ideal for projects requiring strict formalism, such as financial reports, academic papers, or legal documents. It’s also not recommended for small sizes or long paragraphs due to its ornate style.

Practical Tips for Using After Winter

If you’re considering using After Winter in your next project, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Test it thoroughly: Try it in different sizes, colors, and backgrounds to see how it behaves in various contexts.
  2. Check licensing: Before finalizing any client work, ensure you have the correct commercial license for the font. This is especially important if you're using it in templates, merchandise, or print-on-demand products.
  3. Pair wisely: Use a complementary font for body text to maintain readability and balance.
  4. Use sparingly: Since it’s a display font, reserve it for headlines, logos, or accents rather than full-body text.

Overall, After Winter has become one of my go-to fonts for creative projects that need a touch of warmth and whimsy. It’s not for every brand, but for those that embrace personality and charm, it’s a fantastic choice.
